MORE than 40 police officers and an armoured vehicle were used to raid a Tomerong home yesterday.
Robert John Marshall, 35, was later arrested and charged with various offences, including breaking into the Log Cabin Service Station at Tomerong before trying to steal an automatic teller machine.Police, meantime, defended the large number of personnel and resources used to arrest the man, saying it was "appropriate" to the demands of safely detaining him and securing the property.About 6am yesterday, members of the Tactical Operations Group, Shoalhaven Local Area Command and Shoalhaven Target Arrest Group, many of them wearing full body armour, raided a property in Turpentine Rd, Tomerong.Items seized included a sawn-off .22 calibre bolt-action rifle that was believed to be stolen, articles of clothing and what police described as "other items of interest".Marshall was arrested and taken to Nowra Police Station, where late yesterday he was charged with breaking into the service station shop on September 29. Inside the shop, he was allegedly pictured on closed-circuit television.Marshall was also charged with breaching bail conditions, two counts each of assault and breaching an apprehended violence order relating to alleged incidents on May 5 and August 3, malicious damage on May 5, and failing to appear before Nowra Local Court on September 3.He was also charged with an outstanding warrant for an alleged assault.Marshall was refused bail in an out-of-hours hearing late yesterday, and ordered to reappear before Nowra Local Court today.Police continued searching the property for much of the day, long after Marshall was arrested.
